The Appletree Staff are dedicated teachers, passionate about education and child development. They are members of the Ontario College of Teachers and bring many years of training, research and experience to the fields of Special Education, Literacy and Mathematics instruction to Appletree.
Founder Raegan Hornby is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and has worked successfully for over thirty years educating, counselling, advocating and mentoring. She has developed enrichment and remedial programs in all subject areas and has worked in both public and private school settings teaching children, mentoring parents and training teachers. Raegan is a member of the International Dyslexia Association, the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators and the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario.
Years of research plus extensive training and experience in the fields of Special Education, Reading Instruction and Mathematics have given Raegan the skills needed to develop an exceptionally effective teaching methodology that matches the spirit and creativity of students while addressing their diverse needs and learning styles. She is passionate about educating children and facilitating their success.
Co-Founder and Director Lisa Sabino is committed to supporting children and adolescents who learn differently. With a multi-faceted background and diverse experiences in teaching, educational consulting, curriculum development, and museum education/collections management, Lisa has consistently focused on putting children first. Her core philosophy centres on the fact that students excel when in a safe and supportive environment with responsive and intuitive teaching. Lisa's deep respect for children, along with her warmth and sense of humour, allows her to build strong relationships with her students and their families.
Lisa focuses on highlighting real-world connections to students' learning, and enriches her teaching with integration of the arts, history, and social sciences. As both a historian and a teacher, Lisa values using students' natural curiosities as a springboard for engaging them in deep learning and research. As a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and the International Dyslexia Association, Lisa is committed to continually enhancing her practice to best support the needs of the unique and gifted learners she teaches.
Una Malcolm, Principal, is a passionate educator and a member of the Ontario College of Teachers. With a Masters degree in Child Study and Education, Una focuses on using a child's individual strengths and interests to ameliorate his or her academic and emotional needs. Her primary goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where children thrive. Una's extensive training in evidence-based approaches to reading instruction, as well as her work in mathematics curriculum development, equip her with the tools to develop effective remediation and enrichment programs for her students. Una's students appreciate her caring nature, sense of humour, and unwavering commitment to their success.
