Our Programs

At Appletree Learning Centre, we provide academic remediation in literacy, math, and executive functioning using evidence-based Direct Instruction (DI) programming and strategies. DI programs work in small increments to build a student’s skills to mastery. They are backed by more than 50 years of extensive research. When taught properly, at the correct pace, we see our students’ skills progress at a good rate. DI programs teach literacy and math skills in a strategic and systematic way. Students must master each skill before progressing to the next lesson. This ensures retention of skills and helps to build student confidence. We recommend a minimum of two one-hour sessions per week. Morning, afternoon and Saturday sessions are available and take place at Appletree Learning Centre.

Why does DI work?

The four main principles of DI ensure students learn faster and more efficiently than other programs or techniques available:

  • Students are placed into programs based on their skill level.

  • Programs are structured and designed to ensure mastery of content.

  • Instruction can be modified to accommodate each student’s individual rate of learning.

  • All programs are field tested before publication.

DI allows us to:

  • Accurately identify gaps in skill

  • Provide immediate corrective feedback

  • Conduct regular assessments

  • Monitor students’ progress and understanding of concepts taught
